This article will give the tools you need to determine if a painting contractor is as good as he says he is. The following is a list of things to ask for and check to make sure your contractor is a good one.
1. Ask your painting contractor for his Home Improvement Contractors License. Some of you will ask me why and I'll tell you that there are a number of reasons. One a good contractor will have one of these and it will be in good standing. On the other hand a bad contractor has either lost their license or can't get one because of a criminal record. So this can help keep contractors with criminal records away from your home and kids. The second reason this license is important is that it's an insurance policy through the state on any work preformed. If the contractor does a bad job and the paint fails and he won't come back and fix it the state will foot the bill to fix it but the contractors pay into this fund so the state doesn't actually pay. Then the contractor will lose there license letting everyone know their a bad contractor. This license also lets you know their not some fly by night operation set on stealing everyones money cause it takes a while to get a HIC license. Also check their license on the state website to make sure it's in good standing with no complaints.
2. Ask your contractor if there a Better Business Member no matter what still check them out at the BBB.
3. Ask your contractor for a Certificate of Insurance with their company as the company covered and that their covering the job site.
4. Check to see their reputation on Angie's List. This is full of consumer reviews and can really keep you from making a horrible mistake in choosing the wrong contractor. The cost can be as low as $15 a year to be a member depending if you live near a metro area which are more. At Angie's List you can check contractors and health providers reputations so it's easily worth the cost for one year.
5. If your home was built before 1978 check to make sure your painting company is a lead certified firm. After all you won't want contaminate your home with toxic lead dust.
6. Check the contractors website to see if they have before and after pictures or a video portfolio.
7. Finally ask for 3 references of the last 3 jobs they did not the ones they want to give you. Make sure to call the references as these clients can give you a good idea how good a contractor is also ask for a reference from a house they painted 5 years ago in the area you live and go by and look at how well the paint job is holding up, it still should be without problems.
